How to Recognise and Treat Hot Spots on Dogs
A hot spot on a dog is a patch of inflamed skin that often starts small and spreads quickly as the animal scratches, chews or licks it. The sore may look wet, ooze, crust over or lose hair. It is not caused by the dog being too warm, despite the name; the usual medical term is acute moist dermatitis, with bacteria taking advantage of damaged skin.
Early treatment can prevent a minor irritation from becoming a painful, infected wound. Keep in mind that a hot spot is a symptom rather than a diagnosis, because fleas, allergies, ear problems and simple injuries can all trigger the same cycle. Australian conditions, including humid summers, flea activity and outdoor grass or mulch, make prompt care especially familiar to many dog owners.
What a hot spot actually looks like
The classic sign is a sudden, roughly circular red patch that feels warm, damp or sticky to touch. Hair may stand up before falling out, and the skin can ooze a pale or brownish fluid. Australian owners often call it an “angry-looking patch”, which describes the irritation well.
Hot spots commonly appear on the neck, shoulder, flank, belly, rump, base of the tail or between the toes. Constant chewing is a major clue, especially when the dog turns repeatedly, yelps or seeks attention. The lesion may enlarge within hours, so its size at first glance is not a reliable guide to how serious it is.
Not every red patch is a hot spot. Ringworm, insect bites, contact dermatitis, demodectic mites and deeper skin infections can look similar, and some have a dry, raised crust rather than moist skin. A quick photograph taken in good light can help your vet judge progression, but diagnosis should not rely on appearance alone.
Why Australian dogs get hot spots
Scratching creates tiny breaks in the skin; saliva then loosens hair and encourages bacteria to multiply. Damp fur, a heavy coat or a skin fold can worsen the problem, and the dog’s chewing keeps the cycle going. This is why the condition is called acute moist dermatitis, even though the first trigger may be an allergic itch.
Northern Queensland, the humid subtropics of coastal New South Wales and other warm districts often bring sticky weather and heavy dew, which can keep a dog’s coat damp for long periods. Melbourne’s changeable summers can also produce damp grass and condensation around indoor heating. Coastal dogs need a proper rinse and thorough dry after swimming rather than being left to air-dry in salty sand.
Environmental triggers include flea bites, food reactions, grass seeds, irritating shampoos and an infected ear that the dog scratches to reach. Matting can hold moisture against the skin, while shared damp bedding creates another warm patch. General skin and coat care is useful for establishing healthy routines, but affected skin needs veterinary attention rather than home cosmetics.
When to contact a vet
A small, shallow patch that is clean, mildly itchy and not expanding can be monitored closely after calling your veterinary clinic for advice. Photograph it, keep the dog from licking and recheck it several times a day. If it improves within 24 hours, home care may be reasonable, but advice is especially useful for puppies and dogs with sensitive skin.
Seek urgent veterinary care if the patch is spreading rapidly, deeply painful, bleeding, filled with pus or has a strong smell. Also seek help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, fever, marked lethargy, refusal to eat, vomiting or any sign the dog is systemically unwell. Areas near the eyes, mouth or genitals need prompt assessment because medication and cleaning products can irritate sensitive tissue.
At the clinic, a vet may examine the skin, check the ears and anal sacs, and look for fleas, ticks or wounds. Skin scrapings, tape tests or fungal testing can be used when another condition is suspected. Deep infection may require oral antibiotics and pain relief, while a simple surface problem may need antiseptic treatment and control of itching.
Cleaning and treating the affected area
If your vet says home care is suitable, begin by stopping the licking. An Elizabethan collar is usually more useful than trying to distract the dog, and it should be left on long enough for the area to dry. If your dog is calm and tolerates handling, clip the surrounding hair with blunt clippers so the skin is visible. Do not pull mats tightly or bathe the whole dog unnecessarily.
Rinse the area gently with lukewarm water and pat it dry; repeated soaking can increase moisture. A veterinarian may recommend a specific chlorhexidine rinse or antiseptic product, used exactly as directed. Avoid hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, concentrated iodine, essential oils and perfumed human creams. Tea tree oil is particularly unsuitable for dogs because it can be toxic when absorbed through broken skin or swallowed while they lick.
Do not use leftover antibiotic or steroid creams, as the wrong product can irritate the skin or delay correct treatment. If a spray or ointment is prescribed, apply it to a clean, dry surface and prevent the dog from licking until it has absorbed. Medicated baths are generally more practical than repeated spot applications on a squirming dog, and a thick bandage can trap heat and fluid, so follow your vet’s instructions rather than sealing the area.
Treating the cause as well as the spot
The spot itself needs attention, but the underlying trigger decides whether it will return. Flea allergy is common in Australian dogs, and even a few bites can start severe itching. Use a veterinarian-recommended flea treatment on every pet in the household, including indoor cats, and keep the schedule consistent. Never use a dog flea product containing permethrin on a cat, and check labels carefully if both species share the home.
Allergies, ear disease, anal-sac problems and damp skin folds can each need their own treatment. For growing dogs, sound nutrition helps maintain the skin barrier, so owners comparing large breed puppy food should prioritise a complete diet suited to the dog’s size and life stage rather than adding supplements that may worsen itching. A food trial is worthwhile only with veterinary guidance, because an elimination diet takes time and an unnecessary one can leave a puppy short of essential nutrients.
If a dog develops several hot spots in the same place, or a new one appears every few weeks, request a full review rather than repeatedly treating only the skin. Your vet may assess the flea plan, coat care, allergy patterns, ear health and the dog’s environment. Recurrent spots are sometimes mistaken for stubborn infections when the real trigger is a recurring bite, moisture source or irritation that has not yet been identified.
Preventing another episode
Prevention is simpler than managing an active outbreak. Keep the coat dry and combed, remove small mats early, wash pet beds regularly and let them dry fully in sunlight or moving air. Dry the underbody and skin folds after swims, walks through wet grass or time in a damp kennel. In many Australian backyards, mulch, grass and sand collect moisture and debris, so rinsing the kennel floor and washing bedding on hot days can reduce lingering dampness.
Reliable parasite control is central because fleas can remain active during mild Australian winters and live indoors. Ask your local veterinary clinic about products suitable for your dog’s age, weight and local exposure, then apply them on schedule. Australian pet shops and online retailers may stock different formulations, so read the active ingredient and species-specific safety warnings before buying.
Keep a brief record of where each lesion appears, what preceded it and how long it takes to heal. Share those notes at follow-up visits and adjust grooming, parasite prevention or allergy care with your vet. If the area reddens, swells or opens again, contact the clinic straight away rather than waiting for the next routine check.
