Things You Need to Understand About Reactive Dog Training Tips
How to Teach Your Dog to Give High-Fives and Other Fun Tricks
Teaching your dog to give high-fives combines a simple body movement with a rewarding game. Your dog learns to reach toward your hand, touch it and hold the paw there for a moment. Once that pattern is secure, the same patient approach can produce paw waves, spins, turns and other enjoyable tricks.
Reward-based training works best when each step is easy to understand. Mark the behaviour you want, give a small treat, and release your dog back to normal life. Short sessions, cheerful delivery and clear cues matter more than long drills, especially for puppies, senior dogs and breeds that become frustrated when asked to repeat the same exercise.
A treat pouch, a non-slip mat and a favourite toy are enough to begin; a clicker is optional. Many Australian households use part of their dog’s regular kibble as rewards, so the method need not be expensive. Keep treats tiny, check ingredients for allergies, and make sure your dog is comfortable using the reward before adding any new movement.
Tricks provide mental exercise and improve communication between dog and handler, but they are not a substitute for training calm greetings, recall or polite lead manners. If your dog growls, snaps or appears uncomfortable, stop the game and seek advice from a qualified behaviour professional. A fun trick should never involve pain, intimidation or suppressing a warning sign.
Build the Foundation Before the Trick
Start by teaching a reliable marker and a hand target. Say “yes” or use a click, then immediately deliver a treat when your dog looks at you. Next, hold a treat near your closed hand and wait for your dog to touch it with its nose. Reward that touch, gradually moving your hand slightly so the dog follows it with its eyes and then paws.
Once your dog reliably touches your hand, make the exercise about the paw rather than the nose. Present your open palm, wait for contact, and say a chosen cue such as “high five” only as the paw lands. Mark the contact and give the treat. Your dog should be able to begin without being pushed or physically guided.
Keep sessions to about three to five minutes, with rests between repetitions. A good high-five ends with the paw returning to the floor, a release word such as “drop,” and another treat. If your dog slaps hard, bites the hand or loses interest, return to the easier hand target for a few repetitions before trying again.
Turn One Paw Into a High-Five
Raise the paw naturally by keeping your palm upright and inviting your dog to reach a treat held just above it. The first contact may look more like a tap. Mark it, reward it, and gradually require the paw to follow the treat upward. Avoid pulling the leg or holding it in position, because that teaches dependence on your hands rather than the cue.
Add the verbal cue only when the movement is becoming predictable. Say “high five,” offer your open hand, and reward the paw as it touches you. A brief cup beneath the paw can prevent a quick retreat, but let your dog withdraw at any time. After several successful repetitions, pause before giving your hand so your dog begins to anticipate the movement.
Some dogs need a different route. For a dog that grabs fingers, hold a treat in a flat hand or use a target stick and reward a touch near your palm. If your dog prefers sitting, ask for a sit first, then present the hand at shoulder height. Practice on a mat, where the body position is clear, before moving to busier locations.
Add More Tricks With the Same Methods
Use this structure for other tricks: name the behaviour, position your dog, perform one small movement and mark the result. A spin can begin with a treat moving in a small circle around the nose. A paw wave can reuse the high-five motion, with the open paw moving sideways. For a down, lure the nose towards the floor and reward the moment the elbows settle.
Clever, energetic dogs often invent their own versions, and that responsiveness is useful when shaping new skills. The Border Collie breed profile explains why puzzle work and varied tasks suit this type of dog. Build a spin, a retrieve and a calm mat settle into short sessions rather than asking for advanced tricks immediately.
Choose tricks your dog enjoys. Many dogs find chasing a ball more motivating than food, while others will work for a chewy treat. A simple fetch can reinforce recall: toss the toy a short distance, reward your dog for bringing it back, and release it for another throw. Avoid repetitive high-energy repetitions if your dog becomes wound up, and offer a quiet rest on the mat.
Keep Training Positive, Safe and Legal
Use praise, movement away and treats to reward the behaviour you want. Punishment can suppress a response without teaching an alternative, and tools such as shock collars or painful prongs have no place in this kind of training. If barking or jumping occurs, pause the exercise, reset your dog and reward four paws on the floor before trying the trick again.
Summer changes the routine for many Australian dog owners. In Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, training is often moved to early morning, late evening or a cool indoor room during hot weather. Follow keeping dogs cool for hot-weather precautions, and stop if your dog is panting heavily, stumbling or seeking shade.
Public training should follow local council rules, including lead requirements in parks and streets. Australian animal-welfare legislation, such as New South Wales’s Animal Welfare Act 2010 and Victoria’s Animal Welfare Act 1999, sets minimum standards for humane treatment. Repeated growling or aggression needs a professional assessment, not a party trick, and calm pets should always have a way to rest.
Make Rewards Work in Everyday Life
Generalise a trick gradually. Practise in a quiet room, then on the back patio, then at a dog-friendly park with greater distance and distractions. Reward quick responses, but keep the criterion modest until your dog succeeds consistently. Two calm sessions of three minutes are often more productive than one long session that ends with frustration.
The Australian pet-care market includes everything from training treats and puzzle feeders to day care, boarding, pet sitting and insurance. Choose a reward your dog likes and use no more than about a tenth of daily calories for treats, especially during intensive training. Long-lasting chews can delay learning, so save them for separate settling sessions rather than every repetition.
Connect the routine to everyday benefits: ask for a paw at the door, reward a calm wait at an open gate, or teach your dog to retrieve the mail from a basket. If you would like your rewards to support the wider community, check whether suitable surplus food can be donated through Rollover Hunger, which redirects food to people experiencing hardship. Practise, reward and make the next session easy.
