What is Reiki?
Reiki is the Japanese system created by Mikao Usui. It is the spiritual energy that makes up all things in our world. Its purpose has evolved from spiritual development to energetic healing. Reiki intuitively connects to the area in need, with the practitioner as a conduit.
Reiki practitioners facilitate a healing channel through intention, centering and meditation. This special connection is composed of energetic tranquility and balance which allows the participant (human or animal) to facilitate his or her own healing. Practitioners participate in extensive training to learn this healing method to ensure proper care is given to the recipient.
Why Is Reiki Beneficial For Your Dog?
This natural approach is offered to promote healing on a physical, spiritual, mental and emotional level. It can be hands on or given from a distance, and is an effective accompaniment to conventional and alternative therapies.
Reiki is not intended as a substitute for professional, medical care, but actually works in conjunction with formal treatment to provide a beneficial, holistic supplement for your pet. It is now in many medical centers across the world. Reiki’s safe, peaceful and noninvasive approach goes to the areas in need. While your dog’s in this form of respite, the following can occur after treatment:
• Feeling of health and well-being (stress reduction)
• Acceleration of healing and pain management
• Reduction of pain and inflammation
• Reduction of aggression and behavior problems
• Lessening of side effects of other medical treatments
• Support shelter animals in their transitional home
• Support and assist the dying process
How Is Reiki Offered to Dogs?
As an animal advocate, I fill the space with unconditional love and compassion by sitting or standing in a meditative position near the dog. After my healing intention is placed, and if he or she is open to receiving, Reiki has the opportunity to empower your pet physically, emotionally, spiritually or mentally, by allowing your loved one to be in charge of his or her own healing. When comfortable, he or she may approach me for a hands-on treatment. I do not manipulate energy; Reiki is simply drawn to where it needs to go.
During the session, your dog will be free in his or her natural environment (no leash or harness is used). He or she may enter a state of relaxation, shift positions or alter between both. Choice is important for the acceptance of Reiki. I always honor the animal’s request to receive or not accept Reiki during a session. I also offer the option of Remote Reiki when a dog cannot be physically present at the session. It can be a supportive alternative if your dog isn’t receptive to an on-site session due to extreme shyness, aggression, neurological/emotional ailment, etc.
Reiki is just as useful and powerful even when your pet is not in the same room with me. It has no limits. When the remote option is chosen, Reiki is gently shared with your dog from my home in a safe, healing environment. A photograph is often requested for this type of session so that I can visually connect with the dog on a spiritual level.

experience, I understand that each dog is different when Reiki is introduced; no two sessions are ever alike. Knowing this, I’ve learned to respond to what the dog needs and how he or she feels. Many
dogs place specific body parts into my hands because of arthritis or joint pain, and soak in the energy. Other times, dogs may sit across the room because Reiki is a new healing system to them and they need time to figure it out. So they accept it from a short distance.
Sometimes a dog may show he or she is not ready to connect with Reiki by displaying signs of anxiety or leaving the room. As a practitioner, I acknowledge this and decide if remote Reiki would be a better option or propose Reiki at a later date.
On any level, whether in close proximity to a dog or not, Reiki always works for the highest good. It is the intention of pure, unconditional love that supports the dog’s optimum health.
