When we give in and share a morsel from our plates, our dogs regard us with the sincere gratitude of a true Thanksgiving. When we come home from a long day in a tired world, they greet us with the wild abandon of Christmas morning. And the excitement of jingling car keys? New Year’s Eve has nothing on that.

Every day of the year, our dogs show us the real meaning of gratitude and giving and fresh new beginnings — gifts that a scratch behind the ears or a scrap from our plates or a ride in the car can never repay.
I feel lucky to have Zeus in my life. I know you feel the same about your dogs, too. Our dogs connect us to the goodness we have inside and the goodness we share with each other. They connect us to compassion. They connect us to love.
This holiday season, when the weather’s bad and the lines are long and the hours escape too quickly, take a minute and think about your dog. Consider the lessons of gratitude and giving and fresh new beginnings. Our dogs teach us these things every day — which makes us all very lucky, indeed.
