The 2016 Lizzy’s Fund matching gift campaign is now underway!
Established to provide veterinary and dental care as well as grooming for senior dogs at the Naperville Area Humane Society, Lizzy’s Fund also underwrites the adoption fee for qualified owners choosing to adopt a dog age seve or older. That’s wonderful help for senior dogs and what makes it even better is that, now through April 30th, donations in any amount will be generously matched.
About Lizzy’s Fund
A long-hair Chihuahua named Lizzy became part of the Slupik Family at just five weeks of age on Valentine’s Day, 1993, and for the next 16 years, she was their saucy four-pound family member. Lizzy was opinionated, yet affectionate, and demanding, but always willing to please. Her favorite activities included watching baseball on TV, going for car rides, pushing her much larger Collie sister around, snoozing on the couch and eating homemade chicken soup.
It was a good life, but Lizzy encountered several significant health problems as she grew older. The Slupiks went to great lengths to care for her and repay the love and companionship she gave them. Then, at age nine, Lizzy sustained severe orthopedic problems and there was uncertainty whether she would recover. Two different vets suggested that she would suffer less if put down. Not only did she recover, however, she lived seven more productive years after receiving her “second chance” at a ripe old age of nine. Her recovery was mostly due to alternative medicine treatments which, at the time, were new and extraordinary. Now, these treatments are routine for owners who want their older canine family members to have the best golden years possible.
When Lizzy passed away, the Slupiks wanted to help other people feel the joy that their dear senior Lizzy brought to their lives and they established this fund in her honor. In addition to the medical and grooming care that Lizzy’s Fund provides for older dogs at the shelter, it also provides their new families a comprehensive blood panel and a welcome home pack including a personalized identification tag, leash food, and a copy of the book “My Old Dog.”
Lizzy’s Fund started at the end of 2012 and has grown significantly through the end of 2015. It has now helped approximately 100 senior dogs and you can help NAHS help even more. Just visit www.napervilleareahumanesociety.org/how-you-can-help/lizzysfund to learn more and donate today!
